A safari bed, also called a camping cot or camp bed, lifts you off the cold, damp and sometimes rocky ground. It is the single biggest upgrade to a good night's sleep in a tent. Here is what you need to know about safari beds in Kenya, from prices to setup.
Why use a safari bed?
- Warmer: cold comes from the ground, and a raised bed keeps you above it.
- Drier: you stay above any water that seeps in during heavy rain.
- More comfortable: no rocks or roots under your back, and easier to get in and out of.
- Cleaner: less dust, and fewer insects reach your bedding.
- Storage: bags slide underneath, which frees space in the tent.

Setting up a safari bed
- Choose a tent with enough floor length and headroom. Most 4-person and larger tents fit two cots.
- Unfold the frame fully and lock the legs before putting weight on it.
- Add a foam or self-inflating mattress on top for comfort and insulation.
- Place the legs on firm ground or a groundsheet so they don't sink or tear the tent floor.
Who should rent safari beds?
Safari beds suit anyone on a glamping or luxury trip, older campers, families with young children, mobile and corporate camps, and anyone camping in the rainy season.
