How to lay out a camp kitchen
- Place the kitchen downwind of the tents, at least 10 metres away.
- Put it under a gazebo or dining shelter for shade and rain cover.
- Use one table for preparation and one for serving, and keep the cooler in the shade.
- Set up a hand-washing station with soap next to the kitchen.
- Hang a lantern over the cooking area for evening meals.
Easy group menu ideas
- Breakfast: eggs, sausages, toast and tea or coffee from one big pot.
- Lunch: wraps and salads prepared in the morning and kept in the cooler.
- Dinner: nyama choma, ugali, kachumbari and a one-pot stew.
Safety tips
- Never cook inside a tent.
- Keep gas cylinders upright and away from heat.
- Store food sealed. Monkeys and baboons raid unattended kitchens.
- Have water or sand nearby to put out flames.
