Sleeping Bag Rental in Nairobi: Rent or Buy?

A good sleeping bag is the difference between a great night and a long, cold one. But should you buy one, or rent sleeping bags when you need them? Here is an honest comparison, plus tips for choosing the right bag for Kenya.

Rent vs buy: the numbers

At Kifaru Kampers, sleeping bag rental costs about KES 350 per night (website price, subject to change). A family of four camping for a weekend (two nights) pays about KES 2,800 for four bags, which is far less than buying four quality bags. Buying starts to make sense only if you camp many weekends a year.

Choosing the right warmth

  • Coast, Tsavo, Amboseli: warm nights, so a light bag is enough.
  • Naivasha, Maasai Mara, Laikipia: cool nights, so use a standard bag plus a mattress.
  • Aberdares, Mount Kenya: near or below freezing, so use the warmest bag with an insulated mattress. See our Mount Kenya packing list.
Remember: A sleeping bag only insulates when you're off the ground. Add a self-inflating mattress (KES 600) or a camping cot (KES 800).

Is it hygienic to rent a sleeping bag?

Yes. Every bag we hire out is cleaned and checked between rentals. For extra peace of mind, bring a cotton or fleece liner. It also adds a few degrees of warmth.

Looking after a rented sleeping bag

  • Keep it in a dry bag or a plastic bag inside your luggage.
  • Air it out each morning before packing.
  • Don't eat inside it. Crumbs attract insects.
  • Tell us on return if it got wet, so we can dry it properly.
